This was a fun weekend. Yesterday morning I had the Stauffer ladies' breakfast. We had such a good time catching up with each others' lives and children.
In the evening our church had our annual pig roast/barn party. It was another fun time. A little too cold for my taste, but great food and fellowship.
After church today we met our son Frank so he could have Destiny for the day. Then we went to my cousin Mary Jane Myers's home for dinner. She has been having groups of her cousins every Sunday this month. Cousins Arlene, Louanne, and Erma Martin were there, as well as their sister Revenda and her husband. Also there was cousin Peggy Myers and her husband. After dinner Mary Jane and I played piano and organ together. A very unique afternoon.
We had Christmas musical rehearsal at church at 5. Wow - they are sounding good. The people in the drama practiced for the first time and they are going to be incredible. There will definitely be a lot of laughs. I was just cracking up listening to them, and I've heard it on the C.D. a lot of times already. Anyone reading this who is interested - the performance will be Sunday, December 18 at 7 p.m. at Grace Community Fellowship.
Lisa sent a bunch of pictures of Sophie yesterday. She is 9 months now and learning new things every day. It's just nothing short of amazing how quickly babies grow in the first year.

Trying to keep up
Destiny woke me up at 3:00 a.m. This time she was feverish and very congested. I had given her Tylenol and an expectorant before she went to sleep at 7:30 p.m., but it was time for another dose. Once again, she went back to sleep, but I did not. Now I know why you should have little children when you're young - at least you can go back to sleep after they've woken you up. When you're old you can't! I took her to her babysitter today instead of to preschool.
This was a day for keeping in touch with some of my boys. Ray works night shift and stops in on his way home some mornings. He did that today and we talked for a while. He needed some motherly advice. Sam called me after he was done working at 5 and I had a nice chat with him. Our birthdays are only one day apart (November 8 and 9), so we always try to do something together. And later this evening Jeremy called me on his way to a Halloween costume party - he was dressed as a cowboy. That is really a stretch!! He said he'll send me pictures, so I'll post them when he does.
This evening I cleaned the house since my sisters-in-law are coming for breakfast. I guess I'm trying to "keep up with the Stauffers"! As I cleaned I listened to a special on NBC by Tom Brocaw - In God They Trust. It was really interesting and I thought Tom was very fair in his reporting.

Blessed Stepmothers
I was awakened at 3:50 a.m. by a little girl standing by my bed with a cough that sounded more like the barking of a dog. I made a cup of boiling water and sat her at the kitchen table with a blanket tent over her to breathe in the steam from the hot water. She went right back to sleep after that, but of course, I did not. I decided to take a nice, long bath with a cup of coffee on the side. I felt so elegant and relaxed, I almost fell asleep in the tub!!
I made plans today to have my Stauffer sisters-in-law here for breakfast on Saturday morning. There are five of us. Four of us live here in the Manheim, Lititz area, but the 5th one lives in Minnesota. She is spending some time with her mother at Landis Homes for a couple of weeks. We Stauffer women always have such a good time together. Our step mother-in-law will be coming too. Dick's mother died in 1981, a year before mine did. Most of us were right there with her when she breathed her last breath. It was a precious experience, never to be forgotten. She was only 53! And now I'm almost 54! Unbelievable. A little over a year later, Arlene married Dick's dad and she has been the only Grandma Stauffer most of the grandchildren can remember. We all love her so much.
Dick and I realize more all the time that, while the deaths of our mothers in the early '80s was one of the most trying times for us, our families have been SO BLESSED to have stepmothers that we truly love and get along with. Thank you, thank you, Lord!

Tired bones and broken bones
This day has felt like a test of endurance. It started out with no water here in our community this morning. Thankgoodness for baby wipes and bottled water to help get our bodies cleaned up for the day!
At school we had Grandparents Day, which is fun for some people and exhausting for others - like me. My Wednesdays are full with eight classes, including Middle School Chorus. Today I had that plus doing two songs with the entire student body for the grandparents during my lunch break, which meant pushing my piano to the gym and then back again. Directing 44 minutes of Middle School chorus with a bunch of grandparents in the room isn't exactly fun either. So enough complaining - at least I could come home and relax for a change. This cold weather is making me go into hibernation mode, I think. I'm starting to remember why I want to move to Florida some day, besides the obvious. And a call from Miki today reminded me of why I don't ever want to move to Sweden - they have been having snow all day today! She also said that Bjorn broke his arm at school on Monday. Dick has been wondering if he broke his nose playing basketball on Monday evening. I guess someone's elbow must have hit him hard enough to cause a lot of bleeding. He's got some swelling and a bit of discoloration at his eyes too.

Camp Andrews
Yes, I'm still alive. We were at Camp Andrews for the weekend with my family, and I've been trying to catch up ever since - on work and on sleep.
The weekend was just wonderful, as usual. We've spent the 4th weekend of October at Camp Andrews every year since 1989. My sister Betty and family came from New Hampshire, my sister Rose and family came from Georgia, my niece Lori and family came from Michigan, Anthony and Lori came from State College, my brother-in-law Elvin came from Lake Meade,PA, and the rest of us were from Lancaster County. My sister Barb's family from Idaho did not come, and many of our children who live out of state also did not come. But it was a BLESSING to be there together. We always share many laughs and many tears, especially this year as we so vividly remembered that the last time we were with our sister Janet was last year at Camp Andrews. We still miss her so tremendously, but it is amazing to see how God has been with her family and how his hand has been upon them through all their sorrow and adjustments.
One of the great highlights of our time together is singing. I think my dad feels like he's almost in heaven already when he gets to sing with his family. He's such a wonderful man, a loving dad and grandpa, and we are so blessed to be his family. Our mother died in 1982, but our stepmother, Mary, joined our family a year later, and we just love her more and more every year. She is the most fun and funniest older woman I have ever known. What a pair they are!
Thank you, Lord, for family.

My beautiful feet (ha! ha!)
I had an appointment with a podiatrist this morning. For the pain I've been having in my one ankle, he wrapped it with something that may not get wet, and I must keep it on until I go back in two weeks. He also told me to stay off the treadmill at the gym, which almost made me feel like crying. Now that I've finally gotten a good exercise program going for the first time in years, he tells me to stay off the treadmill. I know there are other things that are not as hard on my feet, but I just don't like them as much. But I'll be a good girl, I guess, because I do want this ankle to heal. He also took impressions of my feet to get orthotics (I don't know how to spell that word) made for wearing inside my shoes.
I got the food made for my meal at Camp Andrews this evening. I was so sleepy when I started cooking, so I drank a cup of coffee. Guess what? Now I'm not sleepy.

Some awesome young people
Slowly, but surely I'm getting things crossed off my long list for this week. Last evening I had a practice with the youth worship team who will lead on Sunday in my absence. This evening I got most of the groceries I need for the weekend and I'm almost finished with our weekly laundry, except for the folding. Tomorrow evening I'll prepare a meal for 35 people, which I will serve on Sunday at Camp Andrews.
I was SO blessed last evening as the youth practiced. Most of the kids on the worship team were former students of mine, and it's just the awesomest thing to be able to go away and let them take over. Usually our youth leader, Lloyd Herr, leads with them when I'm away, but this weekend he is going to Outer Banks, so they're leading without him or me. The one who is leading is Joe Stauffer (no relation!) who is in 10th grade. All through the years as one of my students, he could not even carry a tune, but he had lots of enthusiasm. Jeremy taught him guitar, and he took off with that and has become a really, really good guitarist. In 8th grade he began to grow spiritually, and by the end of that year I noticed he was singing in tune! Since then his voice has gotten stronger and his confidence is just off the charts. Last evening as I watched and listened to him, I just felt blessed out of my socks. Also helping him was Kaitie Ward, another former student of mine, also a 10th grader, and one of Jeremy's former voice students, She has one of the most beautiful voices and she's such a beautiful girl. It's just awesome to see kids using their talents to lead people into the presence of the Lord. And then there's Jason, our trumpet player. He's a young adult that I've known since he was just a toddler. He has become such an anointed worshiper. He just gets into a zone and takes off with that trumpet with his eyes shut and off we go, right into the heavenlies. I can't even imagine what it will be like to worship in the very physical presence of the Lord when we get to heaven. "I Can Only Imagine..." That's one of the songs the kids are singing on Sunday. You should hear Kaitie sing that one.
Well, time to bring myself back to reality. Too bad!

Gearing up for the weekend
I think this is going to feel like a marathon week. This coming weekend my family will be going to Camp Andrews for our annual get-together there. This will be a special weekend, because a year ago at Camp Andrews was the last time we were with my oldest sister Janet. She died in her sleep three weeks later. All 8 of us siblings were there that weekend, from all over the country. This year 6 of us will be there (Barb from Idaho can't make it this year, and Janet is in heaven). And my dear dad and step mother will be there, along with some of our children and grandchildren - between 30 and 40 people altogether.
So this week, in addition to my regular schedule, I need to prepare a lot of food for the weekend and prepare our youth worship team to lead worship without me on Sunday. I think my regular three days at the gym after school will be cut down to one day - if I'm lucky.
Yesterday Enid picked Destiny up after school and had her for the evening. I did my grocery shopping at last, and also went to a Roland workshop held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church. It was put on by Reifsnyders Piano and Organs, where I purchased the Roland digital piano for the school. Now I can hardly wait to get to school today, because I understand some things my piano can do, and I'm eager to try them.
Dick always plays basketball at the Lititz rec center on Monday evenings. He's been doing that for over 10 years. This year the attendance is low, for whatever reason. Often only 7 - 9 guys show up. They used to have enough guys for 4 teams, plus subs.

All in a Sunday
I introduced an awesome song in church this morning. It's called Adonai, one of Paul Wilbur's songs. Anything he writes or sings is so anointed.
I got a GOOD nap this afternoon. I made Destiny watch a movie instead of TV so there wouldn't be any commercials for her to beg for like last Sunday afternoon. In fact I didn't set my alarm clock right - I had it set for 3:30 A.M.!! Thankgoodness Dick was watching football and kept track of time, or I might have missed my own Christmas rehearsal at church!
Frank kept Destiny this evening, so after rehearsal Dick and I went to Hoss's Steak House for a belated anniversary celebration. Our anniversary was two weeks ago, but we couldn't find anyone to keep Destiny that evening. We're married 34 years. Just amazing.
I had to come home this evening and make a cake for Boss's Day tomorrow. I made my favorite cake recipe. It's called Ice Water cake from the Mennonite Cookbook. It's a really moist, almond flavored white cake. Well, can you believe I didn't have quite enough white flour, so I had to use a little bit of whole wheat flour. That wasn't too bad, because I had to use only a very little bit. But, the frosting I make for that cake uses flour too. It is a white, almond flavored, very fluffy frosting. So I had to make it with all whole wheat flour. I didn't finish it yet - it's a two part recipe where the first part has to cool first. I guess I'll add cocoa powder and make it into a chocolate frosting so it doesn't look or taste gross.

A Lovely Saturday
Dick and I actually slept until 7:30 this morning and were awakened by a little girl, already dressed, standing by our bed saying in a little whiney voice, "I'm hungry." I don't think that ever happened before!
I went to our church's women's fellowship this morning. Chris Cox, a very precious woman at church, shared about the struggle we often have of wanting other things more than we want intimacy with God. She had breast cancer a few years ago and she told of the time she heard the Lord saying to her, "You need to want the sin out of your life more than you want the cancer out of your body." Wow! He really does want us and our love.
I gave the house a thorough cleaning today, worked on plans for the food for my family's weekend together a week from now, and worked on the music for tomorrow morning. I didn't even go anywhere for groceries. It's starting to look like Mother Hubbard's cupboard around here, but we're nowhere near starving.
Our tub drain broke last week, and after several attempts at fixing it, and always having the wrong parts, Dick finally got it fixed today. Don't worry - we don't stink - we have two bathrooms, but the other one just has a shower. I'm ready to soak in the tub. The doctor said on Monday that warm water is good for the joints.
The weather was spectacular today. This evening I could see a beautiful sunset above the treetops, and later a lovely, big full moon from the deck. The trees out back are starting to have colored leaves. I just love nature. How can anyone think it all happened without a design?

Race for Education
Today was our school's annual fundraiser, Race for Education. The children got sponsors in the past few weeks, and today each department (primary, intermediate, and middle school) had an hour to walk and run around the athletic field. There are prizes for the most laps, etc. I think the highest number of laps was Derric Miller, an 8th grader, at 45 (every 5 laps is a mile). I walked the entire hour and did 18 laps, which was a good 3 1/2 miles. The best thing about the day was that even though the weather forecast on Channel 8 this morning was calling for drizzle and rain most of the day, we got NO drizzle or rain. There was no sun either, but a nice breeze - just perfect for a hot activity. I really regret that I forgot to take my camera. It's such an awesome sight with all those children running, and parents and grandparents cheering them on, or even walking with them at times.

Anthony and Lori
Once again there's nothing worth writing about from yesterday, so I'll write about Anthony and Lori and what they're up to these days. We've been with them pretty many times lately, just not at all since I started these blogs. Anthony has a Christian Blues band called Anthony Stauffer and Holy Smoke. They are AWESOME. We went to two of their gigs in September and had so much fun. If you want to know more about them, he has a website www.anthonystauffer.com. He has a C.D. for sale that is the live recording of a concert they did at their church in April. His wife Lori sings backup sometimes with the band. She is a worship leader at their church, and that is an awesome experience as well to hear that worship team. Since August Lori is on the faculty of Penn State University as a professor. She's really enjoying teaching. I knew she would - I watched her do a workshop last winter and she was really good. Her area of expertise is childhood obesity. Anthony and Lori are a tremendous blessing to us, and we're so glad they're only two hours away.

Just a normal day
I was too tired to write anything last night - besides it was just a normal day of school, going to the Lititz Community Center afterward to work out, home to make supper, do the weekly laundry, then Destiny's bedtime routine.
Destiny does live with us full time now. Whenever our son Frank (her dad) or her mother call to ask for her, she's always delighted. But they each have job schedules that make it very hard to provide stable care for her.
She is two weeks too young for kindergarten, so I have her enrolled in our preschool on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at Manheim Brethren in Christ Preschool on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Mondays she goes to Karrye, the young mother from our church who has kept her for me for over two years now. Lititz Community Center has an excellent play room, where she just loves to play while I work out.
So this isn't exactly what I expected to be doing in our 50's, but maybe she's keeping us young! She is both very delightful and very challenging. I often say that I believe that all the many children we raised over the years were for the purpose of gaining the wisdom we would need for raising Destiny!

An Old Lady
I woke up to go to the bathroom at 3:30 a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep. I finally gave up at 4:30 and got up. That is so annoying. After school today we had staff meeting, then I had a doctor appointment at 6 for a physical. It was my first appointment at Cornerstone, just down the road from here. I had Sharon Trani, a physician's assistant, and I really, really liked her. She is referring me to a foot specialist and also to another doctor at Cornerstone concerning my shoulder. I may just go ahead with a corisone shot, because the Valtarin isn't working anymore. After I came home I had to have another tea party with Destiny - she just LOVES her new tea set! I fell asleep reading to her and Dick had to wake me up a while ago. Hopefully I can go back to sleep now! I do sound like such an old lady, I agree.

A Day of Rest (Not)
It's a good thing I had some lazy days this week, because this wasn't one of them. We always leave the house shortly after 8 a.m. on Sundays, because our worship team has practice at 8:30. After church we had fellowship meal, then I did get a bit of a nap this afternoon, interrupted every 15 minutes by Destiny's exclamations of desire for every object offered on the commercials on TV. (Good old children's programing).
From 5:00 to 6:00 we had our first rehearsal at church for the Christmas musical I am directing. We had a good turn-out, plus the promise of others who couldn't be there today. Actually, right now I'm listening to Dick's bass rehearsal C. D. and I can hardly think what I'm writing.
This evening we had a little tea party with Destiny's little porcelain tea set she bought with her own money. I also talked with Jeremy on the phone for a while. He is a salesman at Lazy Boy Furniture Gallery in Tampa. Business is very brisk this month. He had a customer this week that told him they expect to see him on TV someday! He is taking classes at a local art school, working on his degree in Interior Design. As usual, he's got a schedule that's stretched to the hilt.

Another sad day in the world
It seems like disasters are becoming more and more common place. We're hardly finished hearing about the tsunami and Katrina and Rita, and now today there are at least 3000 dead from an earthquake in several Asian countries and over 1000 dead in Guatemala from a landslide. It certainly seems like the end of the world must be nearing. Of course, according to my crazy son Anthony, the real sign that it's the end of the world is that his sister Lisa got an Ipod before he did and his mom has a blogsite and he doesn't!! He, the technological guru of this family, is letting some of us slip past him!!
I talked with Lisa for a while this evening. Sophie is now 8 1/2 months old and becoming quite the active little ham. I can hardly stand it when Lisa tells me all the cute things she does. It's so hard to be so far away. Today she was watching out the window as George was riding by on the mower. She would get all excited and wave her whole arm and say "Da da da da." Of course, Lisa said she says the same thing to Dexter their dog, so....
It rained all day today, sometimes very heavily. I guess some places are really flooded. Not us. We're high and dry here, praise God.

It's raining!!!
The first two weeks after we moved here we had several really hard rain storms. Since then we have had almost no rain - not even thunderstorms. It's been really, really dry. And now it's finally raining, all day long, usually quite steady, sometimes really heavy.
I've had two lazy days of no school. Last evening we went to the Manheim Farmshow for supper and then spent time looking at the animals and the displays. We saw lots of people we never see anywhere else, including my good friend Pat Johnson from my Moms in Touch days.
This evening we went to see the new Nicole and Jonothon's new baby. He weighed 9 1/2 pounds at birth, and now he's a lazy little guy that just wants to sleep all the time and not nurse. The nurses are trying to tell Nicole that it's pretty common and not something to worry about. His name is Ethan Cole.
