Low Country Boil, fun times with the boys, and pen pal reunion

It's only Tuesday, but I've taken a whole lot of pictures just since my Saturday update.  I'll start out with this one taken Sunday evening from Anthony and Lori's patio.  We had just gotten done saying that we haven't been seeing as many deer lately.  And Anthony said, "Speak of the devil!"  And sure enough there was a deer grazing in the yard below the pond!  Another one joined after I took this picture.

The boys were here with me on Saturday while Dick was helping Anthony and Lori with all the preparations for the Low Country Boil.  Here are some cute pictures and videos from our day.

Austin told Hunter to put his foot up inside his shirt.  I said, "Oh no!!  Austin has a foot growing on his back!"  We laughed and laughed.

Then Austin said, "Hunter, try to wake me up!"

Like I've said before, Hunter is obsessed with letters and numbers.  He discovered my little "smile" display on my table and spelled it out so cute.  I love his clear diction when he says the letters.

I had suggested we could go to a park before we go back to their place, but Austin wasn't interested, and we did other fun things at my house.  When it was time to leave and I was getting Hunter into his carseat, he said, "Go to park?"  I said, "No, we're going home."  He protested!  Austin wanted to know why he was upset.  I said, "He thought we are going to the P.A.R.K."  As we drove off Hunter was back there saying, "P.A.K.  P.A.K."  I thought, "Oh dear, I can't have him learning to spell it wrong, so I spelled out "P.A.R.K" and told him it spells "park."  So he was repeating that over and over as we drove.  I decided while we were at it I might as well teach him how to spell HOME, haha! I thought, "Good grief, next thing we won't be able to even spell things to hide what we're talking about!"  And he's only 2 1/2!!

The weather was a bit chilly for the boil, but at least there was no rain and no hot sun!  There were lots of children and they were having a lot of fun in the basement right next to the patio.  They weren't even interested in eating when the food was ready, so the parents enjoyed themselves without the kids for a while!  Here are a bunch of pics of the kids playing.

I took these pictures near the beginning of the meal.  Quite a lot more people came after this.  We kept making room for more.  I don't know if they ever counted up the total number of people who came.

The fire felt really good long into the evening.

The sunset was AMAZING!!

It was a really good evening.  Lori especially enjoyed it this year because she had lots of time to just sit and talk compared to last year.

On Sunday we went to our 9:00 service at GBRV and then to the 10:45 service at Calvary.  It had been way too long since we were able to go there for one reason after another - day trips, camping, sickness, weekends away, etc.

After the service we definitely needed to have a photo shoot.  Lori and her boys and their friends' children were all dressed in yellow and navy blue!  It was totally coincidental!

We went home for the afternoon all by ourselves and I took a much-needed nap.  Around 6:00 we went over to Anthony and Lori's.  He had a good fire going, and they boiled some leftovers from the evening before.  They were just as good the second time around, and we had a wonderful evening.

On Monday Dick and I had a very important lunch date.   Friends of ours, Bob and Glenda Maury, were driving from their daughter's home in Berlin, Ohio to Lancaster, PA.  Their trip would take them right by State College. Weeks ago we agreed to meet at Cracker Barrel for lunch.  Here we are in the gift shop.

When I was in 7th grade Glenda, from Milford, Nebraska, and I became pen pals through a church magazine, Words of Cheer.   During high school our letter-writing slacked off and we lost track of each other.

When Lisa was a few months old our Witmer family gave a program at a church one Sunday evening.    I was in the nursery with Lisa during my dad's message and discovered that the other mom in the nursery had also grown up in Milford, NE!  She remembered Glenda.  I gave her my address and asked her to give it to Glenda if possible.  A few weeks later I got a letter in the mail from Milford, NE!!!  I was so excited! I totally remember exactly where I was sitting when I read the letter!  She told me all about her wedding during a snow blizzard and sent me a picture of herself holding her baby girl Angie!  We've never lost touch since.

Our first time together occurred in 1981 when they came to Lancaster, PA for a reunion of their Voluntary Service unit.  They came to visit us one afternoon.  We each had three children by then, and we also had added Miki to our family earlier that year.

Four years later in 1985 we took the trip of a lifetime with Lisa, Anthony, and Jeremy - to Nebraska (the Maurys),  to Kansas (where Miki was volunteering with a church plant), and to Ontario (where Dick's brother Bob and family were in mission work.)   Our weekend with the Maurys was so much fun!!  Our children got along so well with each other.  We and our kids even sang at their church that Sunday morning!

In 2000 Glenda came to Lancaster, PA for a cousin's wedding.  She stayed at our house, and the two of us had a really precious time together.  I remember that we discovered we had earrings exactly alike!

In 2008 Bob and Glenda were again in Lancaster for their VS reunion.  We met them at the Cracker Barrel at Rockvale Outlets for a Tuesday lunch that time.  We laughed at our similar clothes and hair styles!

And now ten years later they were again coming to Lancaster, PA for that same reunion!  We had a wonderful time together, but far too short.  Again our lives have paralleled each other's in various ways.  They have moved to Hesston, Kansas to be near some of their children.  We have moved to State College to be near one of ours!  We have both experienced joy and loss along the way.  I would have loved to have more time together.

And now it's time for my bed!

Birthdays, shoes, preparations for the boil

It's Saturday!  Time for an update here, but I'm not at all sure I'll get it done.  It's going to be a busy day.  More about that later - if I ever get that far on here.

First off I'll start with a couple of pictures I took while sitting on Anthony and Lori's screened-in porch one day this week.  I never, ever tire of sitting there and just taking in the sights and sounds.

i gotta tell you about a great bargain I got last Saturday.  My sister Doris always talks about how comfortable her Crocs sandals are.  I'm a great fan of the old style Crocs for wearing in the house (since I don't usually allow outdoor shoes on my carpet), but I've never had the nicer looking Crocs sandals.  For whatever reason, I checked out Facebook Marketplace on my phone last Saturday.  I don't think I was looking for anything in particular.  But I saw that there was a lady in nearby Bellefonte selling three pairs of Crocs sandals in my size for $25!  I contacted her and we agreed to meet outside the mall.  I walked around in the one pair and loved how they looked and felt.  She said she used to be the manager at our Dress Barn, which has since closed, and she comfortably wore these all day at work.  It was a deal!  I have worn two of the pairs, the black and the navy blue so far, and I just LOVE them!

On Sunday Dick and I left right after our service at GBRV to go to Reading to celebrate Destiny's birthday with her.  She cracks me up.  For the FOURTH year in a row she wanted to do the exact same things - eat at Jumbo China Buffet and browse the bargains at Boscov's tent sale.  Such simple pleasures!  We had a great time together.  Here's our bathroom selfie!

She loves those crab legs.

And sushi.

This picture is so funny!  It looks like Destiny has little piggy tails on top of her head.  I think they were lights on the pole!

Her hair was adorable.  No piggy tails on top!

One day this week I got something special in the mail that I had ordered from Shutterfly.  A few weeks ago I was thinking that I would like to have a different picture in the frame above the bathtub in our master bath.  Then I remembered that one time when I posted a picture of Dick and me standing at Multhomah Falls in Portland Lori has said that I should frame that picture!  So I measured the frame, ordered the enlargement, and I am SO HAPPY with it!!!  The only thing better than getting to look at it every day was actually being there.

This Thursday was Anthony's birthday.  Because Dick and I have choir practice on that evening we offered to babysit Wednesday evening so they could go out to dinner.  I made spaghetti and meatballs for us and the boys - always a favorite with them.

On Thursday evening they had his birthday cake with the boys and took these cute pics.

This was our family when Anthony was a tiny newborn and Lisa was two.  Sometimes I would love to go back to those days.

Today is the annual Low Country Boil at Anthony and Lori's.  It's pretty much the same things as the Frogmore meal we always have at Stauffer camping.  Last year I think there were about 60 people at Anthony and Lori's place!!  I think the numbers will be slightly less this year.  But it's a huge undertaking.  I husked four dozen ears of corn yesterday and cut each ear into three pieces.  They will go into the pot with small potatoes, sausages, shrimp, and maybe clams!

I'll have the boys here today while Dick, Anthony, and Lori do all the rest of the preparations.

Gotta run!

More rain, time with Michelle, dealing with sickness

I guess I'm doing Saturday updates now instead of Tuesdays.  Not sure how that happened.

I'll start this post off with a picture I just took out my front window - very rare sight this past week.  Blue skies and white clouds.  We've had a lot of overcast and several days of rain.  Too much of it, just like lots of other places.

Last Sunday Dick and I had plans to drive down home right after our service at GBRV to meet up with an old friend.  We were not thrilled to hear that we would have lots of rain all day long.  Well, Dick didn't really mind.  But not only that, the high temperature for the day would not even reach 60 degrees!  WHAT????  After all that 90's and humidity for days and days earlier in the week?  I guess nothing should surprise me anymore where the weather is concerned.  It never follow the rules anymore.

Now about that friend.  Some of you readers well remember Michelle.  Others of you have not heard of her before.  Michelle was our first "extra kid" even before our foster parenting days.  When Lisa was about a year old we became acquainted with Michelle (kindergartener at the time) and her single-parent dad.  He had recently started attending our little church, Kauffman Mennonite, near Manheim. After a few months we found out that he was a very experienced and talented bass guitar player, and he joined our Witmer Trio band and then also, a few year later, our Freedom Singers band.   He would drop Michelle off at our house on his way to work in the morning, she would go to school at Manheim Christian from our house, and come home to our house after school until he picked her up.  They ate dinner with us several nights a week.  In the summers she stayed at our house all the time.  Eventually our paths went different directions, and they moved to Texas.  But thanks to email and FB and occasional meet-ups when she comes East we've been able to stay in touch.  Michelle has four children and two grandchildren.  I'm really, really proud of the strong woman she is.  Life has not dealt her an easy road.  We had a really precious few hours together at Divine Swine BBQ on Sunday afternoon.

Here's a sweet picture of Michelle and Lisa in 1978 in the dresses they wore to my sister Barb's wedding.

And this cute one of Michelle with Lisa and Anthony, probably later that summer.

After we said our goodbyes, Dick and I went to Sam's for a couple of hours.  Dick napped, I made sloppy joes for our dinner.  I didn't get many pics this time.  Here's one of Bianca sacked out on the sofa.

She was grumpy when she woke up, so that's the only one I got of her.    Here's one of Sammy.

He loves taking us down to the basement.  He has a red and green strobe light set up which is really cool.  Dick got a few pictures of that.

It was a long, rainy drive home that evening.

On Monday I was starting my food prep when Lori texted that Hunter's daycare had called and said he was crying inconsolably.  She could not leave work and wondered if I could go.  I did, and actually, she showed up too, having walked in the pouring rain from her office.  (His daycare is on campus.)  He was no longer crying, but they said he has a few blisters that might be the beginning of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease, which had been going around at daycare.  Lori called her pediatrician, but they did not even want him to come to their office because it's so contagious!  They gave her advice over the phone.  Pretty much just the basic ways to relieve pain.  I had brought children's Tylenol along, which she gave him, then I took her back to work, and Hunter and I went to my house.

He was as sweet as ever the rest of the afternoon.  His nap was only about 1/2 hour long, I think because his feet were really itchy and he couldn't stop scratching.  But he really is the most contented child I have ever known.

He loves to put measuring cups at the Keurig as if he's making coffee for everyone!

He's obsessed with counting.  They couldn't believe it at his daycare last week when he counted to 60.  He did that in my car too recently.  He just needed some prompting at the beginning of each decade.  Here's a video from Monday.  He had his mouth full of grapes at the beginning, and he got things mixed ups a few times, but his facial expressions, especially when we was counting in the 20's is just adorable!

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Lori stayed home with Hunter.  Unfortunately, she got it much worse than he.  Very painful blisters in her throat and especially on hands.  I feel so bad for her!  Hunter was here with me Friday and again today.  He seems to be completely over it, thankfully.    Please pray for Lori.

I guess it was Monday that we had flooding again.  I had to drive through shallow water when I left our community to take Hunter home.

This is usually a ball diamond and playground.

But of course, this was nothing compared to what people in the Carolinas are experiencing from Tropical Storm Florence.

My choir at GBRV is back in business again after our summer break.  We're starting to work on a new Christmas musical called Good News from Home, plus songs for Sunday mornings.  Tomorrow we'll be doing You Are Mine, one that the mass choir had done at the Middle School Choral Festival a number of years ago.  I love it so much.  The lyrics are so good too.

You Are Mine
David Haas
I will come to you in the silence,
I will lift you from all your fear.
You will hear My voice,
I claim you as My choice.
Be still, and know I am near.

I am hope for all who are hopeless,
I am eyes for all who long to see.
In the shadows of the night
I will be your light.
Come and rest in Me.

Do not be afraid, I am with you,
I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me,
I will bring you home.
I love you and you are mine.

I am strength for all the despairing,
Healing for the ones who dwell in shame.
All the blind will see,
The lame will all run free,
And all will know My name.

Do not be afraid, I am with you,
I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me,
I will bring you home.
I love you and you are mine.

I am the Word that leads all to freedom,
I am the peace the world cannot give.
I will call your name, embracing all your pain.
Stand up, now, walk, and LIVE!!

Do not be afraid, I am with you,
I have called you each by name.
Come and follow Me,
I will bring you home.
I love you and you are mine.

Friday was Destiny's 18th (!!!!) birthday!!  I just can't believe it!  I had been going to childbirth classes with her mother each Wednesday evening, and that particular evening, Wednesday the 13th, she was starting to wonder if she might be in labor.  When we got to class, which was held at the hospital,  they decided she should go up to the maternity ward and get checked.  She was indeed in labor and was admitted.  Frank got there from work around midnight, and sometime around 1:00 AM Destiny was born!  My first thought was that her eyes were already open and they were BIG!  I was instantly in love!

The other day I made a collage for Destiny, a picture from each year of her life since the day she was born.  SOOO many memories.  I'm hoping to be able to go spend time with her tomorrow.

Well, that's all for this week.  Hunter is currently going around turning all my lights on and off, on and off.  Now that he's tall enough to reach the switches he has so much fun with that.  Good grief, seems like it was just last year that Austin got tall enough to reach the switches.  These children just don't stay little!!  Hunter is so easy to have fun with.  Here's one last screen shot from a video I made yesterday, trying unsuccessfully to get him to sing Happy Birthday with me.  He was just too silly.
