Baby Shower!
Thirty-four years ago I was doing a lot of the same things in the month of December as I still am doing this year - preparing for a school Christmas program as well as a church Christmas program. However, there was one additional thing I was preparing for - our first baby! My due date was January 11, and I just hoped I would not have this baby a month early as my aunt Dorothy had just done the month before.
The practices for the youth Christmas program were held at our house. The dates that year were exactly the same as they are this year. We had a rehearsal on Tuesday evening, the 4th. It was decided that we needed more practice, so Friday evening seemed like the next available time. As the youth were eating and having fun I went around to everyone to remind them that we're having another practice at our house Friday evening. Little did I know that my sister-in-law was following me telling everyone, "DON'T come Friday evening. We're having a baby shower here for her!"
Friday evening came and I fully expected a houseful of teenagers again. To my total surprise, when the first knock at the door came, there on the porch were WOMEN and GIRLS - our mothers, sisters, church friends, etc. "SURPRISE!" they yelled! And I was. I loved it! Several years before, when a bridal shower had been planned for us, I had seen a note that I should not have seen, which gave away the surprise. So it was fun to be really, truly surprised this time.
As it turned out, there was no hurry to have that baby shower. Lisa wanted to stay in the confines of my womb for a LOOONG time. The church program came and went, my school program came and went, my sister Doris's wedding (Dec. 28) came and went, I had absolutely everything as ready as it could possibly be, my due date came and went, a couple more weeks came and went, and FINALLY a month after Christmas, on January 25th Lisa decided to make her grand entrance. She was probably in there thinking, "If I come out too soon, Mom's never going to have time to pay attention to my birthday. I'm going to wait a month so she'll always have time to recover from Christmas first!" Good thinking, Lisa!
My pictures from that era are really pathetic, but here is what I looked like at that baby shower on December 7th, 1973!

How nice to remember those days. . . . . .I was trying to think which one of my children was born in 1973. I guess it was Ben. Jana was born in 1971, Chad in 1972 and Ben 1973. Mom was afraid that I was going to have a baby every year for the next twenty years! That is a cute picture of you. . . how tiny you look! We were all tiny back then! Ha! Ha!
Where's the baby?? ;-)
I just posted a prego picture of myself (from last year) - Colin was a year old yesterday!
Cute picture and story - I wish our children would have waited - 2 of our 3 children have birthdays in December - Lisa was smart to wait!
Oh I love looking at "OLD" photos. LOL
My Bree was the same way...she was 19 days past her due date. When she finally decided to make her appearance she weighted 9 pounds 1-1/2 ounces!!!
Hugs!

Didn"t we look funny back then. My daughter Michelle was born on the 27th of Jan. 1973 . She will be 35.
I had a surprise baby shower when I was pregnant with Susan. It was in the summer and I was wearing sandals. You know how your feet sweat in the summer? Well, I took my shoes off and the soles of my feet were dirty from sweating. My poor mother was mortified!
I like the idea of surprise showers. The new custom of the recipients planning their own showers seems kind of cold to me. It's like - "I'm going to invite you to a party for me and you're expected to bring me a gift."
Cute post, and like Kat, I LOVE old pictures!
I think that picture is neat! I love B & W photos...but I must say, you have IMPROVED with age! That's not fair!!! ;-)
What a good story, and I love the pic, too.
Know you are knee deep in programs, find a little time to relax, if you can. I have 2 this week and the biggest one next week.
I WAS tiny, Cheryl. Four days after Lisa was born I stood on the hospital scales and it said 98 pounds. Can you imagine? I think I had reached 116 right before she was born. That was a LOOONG time ago.
I remember that shower! I had forgotten the story of the practice. You were so tiny!! I haven't seen 98 since about 5th grade!!
