Today is GOOD Friday. Yesterday I asked the kindergarten class why we call it Good Friday when such a terrible thing happened on that day. It blessed my heart that they knew that it's because Jesus died so our sins can be taken away. I have been teaching the entire school the song How Deep the Father's Love this spring and it has given me so many opportunities to explain what happened at the cross and why it happened. I wish all of you could hear and see the primary students sing this song. They KNOW what they're singing about and it just thrills my heart. I'm sure most of my readers are already familiar with the song, but because it's Good Friday today, I'm going to post the lyrics for you to meditate upon.
HOW DEEP THE FATHER'S LOVE
by Stuart Townend
How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the Man upon the cross,
My sin upon His shoulders!
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished.
His dying breath has brought me life.
I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom.
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection!
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart,
His wounds have paid my ransom.
I'm doing a little of my own suffering today, unfortunately. First of all, after resisting EVERY germ that made its rounds at school and here at home this entire school year, I am now fighting a disgusting head cold. I'm drinking green tea like it's going out of style, trying to get rid of this before it transforms itself into some other kind of cold.
On top of that, I sprained my ankle last evening. Destiny's mommy called and asked to have her last evening, which was fine, especially since we have no school today, and she didn't need to get to bed early. When I picked her up around 9:30 PM, I was walking off the front stoop, not realizing there was a small step between the stoop and the ground. Just that quick my ankle bent over and I fell to the ground. I think it scared Destiny. She said, "I never saw you fall like that, Grandma." Thank God, it's just a slight sprain. I can still walk if I turn my foot a little.
On the way home Destiny said something that made me smile. She said, "My eyes just go shut, Grandma. It feels like there are little, tiny stones on top of my eyelids that just push them down." Have any of you ever thought of it like that when you've had trouble staying awake??
And then this morning Dick made me laugh. Destiny had said 'no' to me about something I told her to do. In a very stern and serious voice Dick said, "Don't say 'no' to Grandma." Then in a voice that I knew was meant to get a rise out of me, he said, "Grandma can say 'no' to you, and she can say 'no' to me, but we NEVER say 'no' to her." I just cracked up, and it still makes me laugh just writing it.

I love that song. Thanks for posting it for our meditation.
I also loved the story about Dick instructing Destiny. I laughed out loud and those in the room had to find out what I was laughing about! That is so knee slapping funny!
I forgot to say that I was sorry that you sprained your ankle. Wow! this must be the week for falling. I fell in the kitchen this week and if it hadn't been for the doorway, I would have run my head through the wall. Fortunately, I ran my shoulder and cheek into the door frame. Now the Ibuprofen has to do double duty!
Thanks for posting those lyrics. They are definitely worth remembering right now. It is cool to see when kids start understanding what they are singing about. I work with the Kindergarten choir at my church and some of the things they say and their simple understanding touches my heart MANY times. We think we are teaching them, but really, they are teaching us many times, aren't they??
Jean, I'm so sorry you sprained your ankle and that you're getting a cold on top of that! Hope both are better real soon.
Thanks for the beautiful post about Good Friday. Love the song!
Hey...thanks for your quick comment on my blog! I was trying to figure out how to link things when you left the comment. Go back there and check it out now...I figured it out and there are links to a couple of things! YEA!!!! :-)
And I meant to say earlier, I am sorry about your sprained ankle too..that is NO fun. Hope it's better soon..AND by Sunday! Happy Easter!
Well, at least you didn't fall and bust your lip and have to go to the ER and have it stitched up and have your daughter suggest you wear a bag over your head for Easter Sunday! A sprained ankle is no fun, though, and I would like to know why middle-aged women can't quietly turn their ankle without falling flat on the ground. It is so embarrassing! And the story of Dick and Destiny is so precious! Isn't it nice to have husbands that are good friends, wonderful support and can still make us laugh?
Hope you feel better, soon. Hey, at least it's a good excuse to sit on the couch and read or watch t.v. "OH...it's still hurting, I think I need to sit here a little longer. And if you'll bring me a cup of tea...it will feel better..." :) :) Have a blessed Easter.
Sorry about your ankle, Jeanie. Falling is such a big deal when you aren't a child any longer. My tail bone still hurts at times, and I fell on it over three years ago! I love the words to the song. I don't know the melody, but I'm sure it's very beautiful. Have a great Easter.
