All About Friday

This post will be all about Friday (of last weekend, of course.)

I forgot to mention that on Thursday evening Dick and Mike had loaded up all the folding tables and chairs from Houserville House of Hope into Dick's pickup truck and then unloaded them in Anthony's garage.

On Friday morning Amber and Megan met Dick at my Fillmore church office to load up all the folding chairs from there.  They stopped in here to see my house and grab a few bites to eat.  I was enjoying coffee and breakfast with Martha, Miki, Christel, and Maria.

The first order of business for Martha and me was the mall.  Martha had not brought shoes that were suitable for the rough, hilly terrain at Anthony and Lori's, so we needed to find her some flats.  We went to Shoe Department where I had already gotten a pair.  As it turned out, she got a pair of black ones exactly like the navy blue ones I had bought!

Finding the right shoes had been quite an adventure the previous weeks.  When I got my dress at Ross, I wasn't quite sure if it was black or navy blue.  I found a black, sparkly pair of flats I really liked at TJMaxx.  They were really pretty and comfortable too.  But when I held them by my dress in the sunlight, it was clear that my dress was navy blue.  So I returned them and ordered a pair from Macy's online.

I really liked them when they came, but they were not comfortable.  Actually, they were a bit big and I could easily step right out of them.  I bought those grippers to put in the heels to tighten them up.  That Saturday I was cleaning my house and decided to wear them to break them in.  Oh my.  I tried all kinds of things.  My heels were starting to hurt, so I took out those grippers and tried putting cotton balls at the toes instead.  After a while my heels were really starting to hurt, so I put bandaids on each of my heels.  After a few hours I had full-blown blisters on my heels.  No way were these shoes going to be ok.

So on Monday (Labor Day) I went to the mall, first of all to Shoe Department.  That is where I found the flats in the top picture.  I didn't think they were as pretty as the others, but they were more comfortable, and cheaper too, so I got them.

From there I walked to Macy's to ask if I could return the pair I'd gotten online.  While there, I discovered these sandals with a very slight wedge heel.  They felt wonderful, they were pretty, and only $13!  I was able to return the online pair, so I got these sandals.  I knew that, with my feet issues,  it wouldn't hurt to have two different pairs to switch out the day of the wedding.

That evening I tried everything together and felt satisfied.

While Martha and I were at the mall to get her shoes Friday morning, I had another shoe adventure to go on.  Destiny needed a pair of cool sneakers to go with her dress, and she had checked if the Journey's store in our mall had the ones she wanted, and her mom was going to send cash with her for me.  But I had to get them.  What seemed so easy turned out to be crazy.  Destiny could not check her phone to answer my questions except between classes.  First of all, I mistakenly got Vans instead of Converse.  Thankfully Martha and I had not left the mall yet when I discovered that mistake.  So back we went to return the Vans and buy the Converse instead.  Except there were size issues.  I went with the sales guy's recommendation and got size 6 because they run big.  But later she told me she was sure they would pinch her pinky toes.  And maybe they wouldn't match her dress after all.  I told her I didn't have time to do anything about it.

Martha and I had to run to Giant to get subs for all the hungry workers at Anthony and Lori's house.  I think we got 8 huge ones, arriving there around 12:30.  Everybody was hot and tired and a little grouchy.  I think we saved the day.

The next order of business was putting up the huge tents.  There were 70 people coming to the rehearsal pizza party along with a strong possibility of thunderstorms!  We recruited everyone possible.  Two more of Jeremy's friends had already arrived, Jeremy offered the two landscapers extra cash if they would help, Dick, Anthony, Mike, Jeremy, Martha.  A real team effort on a very hot, humid day!

I forgot to mention that Jeremy's boss, Desi Miller, and her fiancé had arrived from Portland just before we put the tents up.  They were given a big shopping list (things like ice, etc) and were on their way.  (Desi also is a licensed minister and would be officiating the ceremony.)

When that was done everyone dispersed hither and yon.  I had some errands to run, so I took that chance to make another quick trip to the mall to deal with the shoe issue for Destiny.  She ended up deciding that perhaps white sneakers would be better.  So I got them, but kept the burgundy too so she would have a choice, then I'd return whichever ones she didn't want.

I was also getting excited as I was hearing from more family members arriving in town.  Thyda posted this lovely picture of her and Ray eating at a Mexcian restaurant close by.

On my way back I stopped by the Residence Inn where most people were staying.  Look who I found in the pool!!!  And then I met Thyda in the hall.  I was getting so excited!

When I got back to Anthony and Lori's I got even more excited!  Lisa, George, and Sophie had arrived from Florida!  They had flown to Baltimore and driven a rental car to State College.

Before the pizza and the arrival of all the others who were coming, the rehearsal was held.  Bianca held Sophie's hand and stood there as sweet as pie the entire time!  Next to them is Mike's sister Linda from California. (Some of you may remember a number of years ago when she donated one of her kidneys to Mike.)  Next to her is George, then Linda's daughter Sheldon and her son Quintin.  Next is Colleen  (one of Mike's good friends from high school days in Pittsburgh), and then Kevin (good friend and neighbor in DC.)

On this side are Shauneen (wife of Kevin on the other side), Tom (a good friend of Jeremy's from his Florida years), Lisa, Josh (a good friend of Jeremy's from his Lancaster years), Miki, Daryl (good friend of Jeremy's from his Lancaster years), and Austin and Sammy.

Sammy was a hoot.  After about 15 minutes of everyone talking through the rehearsal, Sammy looked up at Desi and said, "Is this what we're doing?  Just standing here talking??  I thought this was a party."  Of course everyone cracked up, so he hammed it up some more after that!

Because of the amount of people coming for the evening, they had been asked to park at a nearby church and call Dick's phone when they were ready to be shuttled up to Anthony and Lori's.  He made good use of our 7- passenger van!  One really funny story out of that:  Someone called Dick and he told them that he's on his way and will be there shortly.  Right after they called him, a van drove into the church parking lot and the people walked over to it, opening the door to get in.  Except it wasn't Dick, and the driver had no idea why these people were trying to get in, hahahahaha!!!

My camera was pretty much missing in action that evening.  I spent a good bit of time just hanging out on the screened-in porch with grandchildren and dogs.  Sophie really loved finally getting acquainted with Hunter.

At the end of the evening I found this sweet sight inside the house.

That night Martha was sleeping at the hotel, but we got the dogs instead!  Miki's friends were crazy over them, so they got lots of love.

By the way, there were no thunderstorms!  Just a slight drizzle at the very end of the evening!

The next post will be all about Saturday!

My Diary of Wednesday and Thursday (last week)

This blog serves as our family's diary.   Whenever we want to check on the details of any event we always say,  "Just check Mom's blog."   So I will be documenting every little detail of our past weekend and the preparations for it.   Parts of it may be offensive to some readers, and I'm sorry for that.  But it was a beautiful experience of working together as a family and celebrating with many others, and I want to write it all down.

Last Wednesday I babysat Hunter as I usually do.  He was blissfully unaware that his world was about to be invaded!

I was cooking a bit more than usual because I knew that the "troops" would soon arrive.  I made fried rice and sweet and sour chicken.  Somehow the fried rice, which I have often made before and always seems like a huge amount, did not seem to be that much after all, hahaha!!

I did not take one picture that evening!  So I have taken pictures from other days and other people for this part.  The first to arrive were Mike, his mother Martha, and the dogs.

Mike, trying out the new hammock the next day.

What a blessing that Martha could be here all the way from California where she lives with Mike's sister's family.  She has been battling cancer for three years, and has had some very disheartening prognoses, even just since she was here at Thanksgiving.  She is indeed a survivor, and it was such fun to spend so much time with her.

Imagine Austin's delight when he got home from school on Wednesday and discovered that Watson and Molly were at his house!

A bit later Jeremy arrived with his "assistants," Megan and Amber.

Megan, a former co-worker of Jeremy's who now lives in Portland, was the wedding planner/organizer.  She did a fantastic job of keeping many lists and checking them many times!  She was AWESOME!!

Amber, who works for the company Jeremy is with now and lives in Tampa, was handling work business for him while they were here.  She even kept his phone some of the time!

The first couple of nights Jeremy, Mike, and the dogs stayed at Anthony and Lori's, Martha slept at our house, and Megan and Amber slept at my friend Peg's lovely airbnb apartment.  It was really dark when I took them there Wednesday night, but I promised them they would have a beautiful view in the morning.  Sure enough!  One of them posted this picture the next morning! (We live over there in that clump of trees closer to the mountain!)

On Thursday morning Martha and I, Megan and Amber trekked over to Anthony and Lori's, and I made a sausage and pancake breakfast for everyone.  Well, not quite everyone.  Lori was already at work, Hunter at daycare, and Austin at school.

Miki called to let me know that she and her two friends (Maria and Christel) had arrived at my house late morning. (This picture was actually taken yesterday at the Dulles Airport.)

So after Martha and I did some grocery shopping,  we went to my house to welcome the Swedes.  Then we all headed over to Anthony and Lori's where the crafting got into high gear.  They were putting Jeremy's designer labels on each little bottle of beer, which was brewed by one of their DC neighbors.  These would be the guest favors.  Miki was working on the flower girl baskets.

Outside, the carpenter was working on the framework for the new hammock.

Anthony and Jeremy strung up the lights.  By the way, I didn't mention that it was HOT!!!  Like in the high 80's and low 90's and very humid!

Two park benches by the pond had been completed.  I took these pics from the house.  One bench is at the far end of the pond where Austin likes to catch newts in the stream.  It will be so nice (for me or Lori or whoever accompanies him) to have a place to sit while he does that.

The other one is closer to the driveway.

While all this activity was going on, I was making a huge pot of taco soup.  I was also texting people, trying to work out transportation for Destiny to the wedding.  To my great disappointment, I had found out that Frank and Lauren would not be able to come.  They had very legitimate reasons, but I was very sad.  I knew that Destiny was very much looking forward to coming and seeing everyone, so I was wracking my brain for ideas.

Jeremy gave me the phone number for his friend Daryl who lives near Reading.  I put his phone number in my contacts and wrote him a long text message, describing in detail what the situation was, where she goes to school, her address, etc. and wondering what time he was coming up Friday, and was there a chance he could bring her along.  A minute after I sent the text I got a reply, "You must have the wrong number.  This is Annette."   What????  I gave all that information to the wrong person??  We checked Daryl's number, and sure enough, I had put a 6 instead of a 9 as the last digit of his phone number!  GRRR!!   But we did get a good laugh out of it.  We kept joking about Annette, and how she was no help at all, haha!!  (As it turned out,  it didn't work out for Daryl to bring Destiny either, but we figured out a way for Bjorn and Jess to bring her Saturday morning.)

After Austin got home from school we tried out the hammock.

Jeremy hung up the new welcome sign he had made.

I took this picture while sitting on the bench at the far end of the pond.  There was a slight breeze blowing, and it was so serene.

I took this picture from the upper driveway as we were getting into the van to go home Thursday evening.

We had a houseful Thursday night!  Maria and Christel slept in our guest room, Miki on our sofa, and Martha on the love seat!  What a trooper she is!

Well, I'll do Friday on the next post!

One picture for now

I know it's been over a week since I've updated here, and I promise I have SO MUCH to write and many, many pictures to share.  But I'm trying to catch up in so many things after our big weekend, in addition to my normal work week.  So for now here is one picture of our family.  (It gets bigger if you click on it.)

But not quite everyone.  To my great disappointment, Frank and Lauren and the kids were not able to come, so Destiny was the only one representing their family.  And Miki's husband and daughter Katrina from Sweden were not able to come.

Left to right: Sam holding Bianca, Sammy, Jenn, George, Lisa, Sophie, Dick and I, Mike, Jeremy, Miki, Jess, Bjorn, Austin, Lori, Anthony holding Hunter, Destiny, Ray, Thyda.

I hope to have time to write all about it on Friday or Saturday!

Lots going on

Lots going on around here!

Last Wednesday was Lori's birthday.  I sent her this picture at work to brighten her day.

In the evening we went to Luna II, a coal-fired pizza place, to celebrate.

This was the new facial expression Hunter kept trying out that day, hahaha!

Anthony and Austin had a hot pepper flakes-on-the-tongue competition!

One evening last week I noticed an orange hue as I looked out my sink window, so I knew that there must be a great sunset in the other direction.

When I went outside to take a picture of it, I decided to take a walk around our house for some more pictures.

Every day I am so thankful we took a chance on those pathetic little impatiens and a few blue salvia that were on clearance,  looking almost dead.

The elephant ears from Dad Stauffer really took off this year too.

On Saturday morning Dick and I had a rare morning at home.  He always works Saturday mornings unless we are away, but this was a holiday weekend and we were home.  Amazing!  I decided to resurrect our family picture wall, which had been boxed up ever since we moved from our Lititz house in 2010.  I've been told that framed pictures on walls are a decorating no-no anymore, but I don't care.  These pictures always brought lots of enjoyment and amusement to anyone who came to our home.  Lori encouraged me to put them up again.

Now I can look up and pray for our kids while I play piano!

These are high school senior pictures.  They are in age order.  Left to right, top row:  Miki, Lisa, Anthony.  Middle row:  Sam, Frank.  Bottom row:  Jeremy, Ray.  The picture of us in the middle was taken in 1991.  The bottom group picture was taken last Thanksgiving.

I stayed home all day Saturday and cleaned the whole house for the first time in a while.  One time when I walked into our bedroom I decided to take a little break and lie on the bed for a while.  I had the drapes open and realized we have quite a lovely view from our bed in the daytime.  I decided I should take breaks there more often!

On Sunday morning the Fillmore choir sang an easy, but fun favorite, "You Are Holy."  Here's a video.  There were three women missing, but the men carried the melody most of the time, so it was ok.  Have I said how much I enjoy working with these guys?

We found out that Austin had a birthday party to go to on Sunday afternoon, so we offered to babysit Hunter so that Anthony and Lori could go out on a date.   I took this picture after Hunter had woken up from his nap and was waiting for his bottle to be warmed.  I can't get over how BIG he looks!!  He'll be turning six months old on Thursday!

The weather was just perfect for sitting on the porch after they came back home.

There go those toes into the mouth again!

I went down under the porch to check out the new seating area they are creating with pallets!

Monday was Labor Day.  Dick spent the day at their place trimming bushes, cleaning up some areas, and helping Anthony to do some electrical wiring for lights.

I baked some more cookies and did some successful shopping.  A very good day!

I was delighted to see this picture on FB today!  Miki and two of her friends flew from Sweden to Washington DC last Thursday.  They spent two nights at Jeremy and Mike's, then drove to Lancaster County where they are staying until Thursday.  Then they'll come up here for a few days.  I can hardly wait!  Today she showed up at Witmer Automotive (my brother and nephew's car repair business).  My sister Mary Ellen works in the office there and took some pictures!  Miki, always the clown!

Miki and Mary Ellen.

Have a good rest of the week!
